If we are our consciousness, then we are everything and nothing in particular, as our consciousness is everything there is to us. If anything is ourselves or ours, then everything is, or else nothing is. Since we can be conscious of others, everyone is part of our consciousness, and every identity there is is part of our consciousness. We must identify with the whole so that we are conscious of more than just one of our identities, but we must also identify with every identity in turn because we can never be fully fully conscious of the whole at once.
