Hieroglyph

I can have half a face,
Never to show the other.
I must stay on your left,
And never turn my head.
One side of me may live,
The other must die.
If you can't have all of me,
Then cut me in half.
I must turn along with you,
And never cross your way.
I'm only a symbol of a man,
Tho' you'll never understand.
What's not shown does not exist,
And we write from left to right.
Who speaks, will against the mute.
The mute not for themselves.
Call sinister what shields you,
For daring to speak of danger;
Call dextrous what fights for you,
Though it's what brings it forth.
